Tom Giralomo-4661 (640x427)This time of year many people are absolutely going crazy to get stuff done in their yard. Whoooa! Slow down and enjoy spring!

The common perception is that there are only a couple of weeks to plant in our climate and we call that time Spring. Other times of the year are viewed as too cold, too dry or too hot. Maybe that is ingrained from our agricultural past?

When it comes to sustainable landscapes, I have installed plants in every month of the year in chilly, central Wisconsin, except January and February. And that is only because the ground is too frozen to easily dig in those two months. Yes, it is often easier to handle and plant when vegetation is still dormant, but that time might have already passed us up.

So don’t stress! I can help you plant in May or anytime after that. The neat thing about our climate (and many others) is you always get a “do over”. Sometimes our springs are so dry, you are better off waiting a few weeks.

One of the things I do when planting, no matter what time of year, is to properly mulch planting areas to retain moisture. Sometimes mulching is even done before the plants go in to create a moist, weed-free, environment that is all set for rapid planting.
